5 Superfoods You Need to Try
Maybe you've heard the word "superfood" being thrown around in the past few years but what does it actually mean? Well, it's just a loose marketing term that is used to label foods that are very high in nutrients. Foods that are labeled as superfoods are typically very healthy, making it convenient for busy consumers to find nutritious things to eat.

If you've heard of superfoods, you're probably familiar with the most common ones like chia seeds, acai and blueberries. But there are a bunch of new superfoods that are becoming popular that you need to check out. New, tasty ways to get lots of nutrients? Sign me up! Let's take a look at a few:

1.) Maca Powder

Maca powder is made from the maca root which is grown in the Andes mountains. After the root is harvested and dried, it is ground to a powder and nicely packaged for your convenience! But what makes this powder so super?

Maca is considered to be an adaptogen, which means that it will adapt and conform to your metabolic needs. Are you sleepy and need more energy? Well, have some maca powder and you will wake right up! Feeling a little sick? Maca will give your immune system a boost! Maca basically helps your body tackle a wide variety of issues that it may be facing.  Oh, and it has vitamins B1, B2, C and E along with calcium, protein, fiber and over 20 amino acids.

Add some maca powder to your smoothies or stir it into your yogurt. It has a slightly malty taste that easily dissolves in liquid. Stir it into your tomato sauce or maybe just mix a scoop with some juice. Maca powder is simple to add to anything, making it a superfood that is super easy to utilize.

2.) Baobab Fruit

It may look like a coconut but this fruit actually tastes similar to a pear. Yum! Baobab fruit comes from Australia and parts of Africa and is also dried and packaged as a powder (just like maca root). You can use baobab fruit powder as a thickener for sauces (goodbye cornstarch!) and smoothies just by whisking it in.

Baobab fruit is super mainly because of all of the antioxidants it has: six times more than blueberries! It also has six times more vitamin C than an orange! Add to that six times more potassium than a banana and twice as much calcium as a glass of milk. Does that sound super enough? I think so. This superfood is definitely worth a try.

3.) Turmeric

Turmeric has been steadily gaining popularity and it is clear why: it's a superfood herb. Actually, turmeric is a root that is comparable to ginger root. However, unlike ginger, turmeric is typically dried and ground into a powder before being sold. You can find the brilliant yellow powder available in loose powder or capsule form (some people love turmeric so much, they take it daily like a vitamin).

Curcumin is what makes turmeric so desirable. But what is curcumin? It's an antioxidant that is incredibly strong and works mainly as an anti-inflammatory. Thanks to curcumin, turmeric is said to help prevent heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. If that's not enough, turmeric is also said to help improve your mood. So take a capsule of turmeric every day, use it as a spice in your foods or just mix it into your water. It's worth it!

4.) Watermelon Seeds

You know those watermelon seeds you were always taught not to eat? Well, now you will be grabbing them by the handful. Toasted and flavored watermelon seeds are becoming a new trend and the main reason is protein.

Watermelon seeds have a surprising amount of protein for such a tiny kernel...5 grams of protein per ounce of seeds to be precise. They are also full of soluble fiber which can lower cholesterol and blood sugar. What's not to love?

Watermelon seeds have a nutty flavor to them and they are great for snacking. Roast them with some sea salt or herbs and you will have a perfect superfood snack to munch on anytime of day.

5.) Lucuma

Imagine eating a citrus fruit that has been drizzled with maple syrup. That's what lucuma tastes like! Don't let that sweet flavor turn you off though, lucuma is frequently used as a sweetener for diabetics thanks to its low glycemic index. You gotta love anything that is sugary sweet but healthy!

Antioxidants and tons of calcium are what make lucuma so beneficial. Add to that some beta carotene, zinc, iron, vitamin C and fiber and you have yourself a superfood. The fact that it is basically a dessert (Fun fact: lucuma is the most popular ice cream flavor in Peru) is just icing on the cake. Thank you Peru for this superfruit.
