Creating a Fitness Plan You Can Maintain
It’s the end of the year and time to bust out some New Year’s resolutions. So, you’ve decided to get fit? That’s awesome! Coming up with a fitness plan that you can maintain is half the battle, so we’ve compiled this list of tips to help you get started.

1. Set a goal

Whether you want to lose weight, tone up, or just feel better, setting some goals will help you get there. Goals can help you stay motivated when you’re feeling low, and the sense of achievement you feel when you smash those goals is second to none.

Whatever your plan, do some research and read about other people’s fitness journeys who had the same goal as you. Look at the type of workouts they did and how long it took them to reach their goals so that you can set reasonable standards for yourself.

Sometimes having the goal to “lose weight” just doesn’t cut it – break it down. How much weight do you want to lose and in what amount of time? Then break it down again into smaller, more achievable goals. The key is to make a plan for how you want your fitness journey to go.

2. Recognize your weaknesses

We all have weaknesses, but we also have the ability to turn those weaknesses into strengths. Part of your fitness routine can be to work on those weaknesses. Whether physical, mental or emotional, exercise can help with them all.

Recognize what your weaknesses are. Maybe you’ve always thought you have weak arms – you can easily incorporate strength-building arm workouts into your fitness plan and make it one of your smaller goals too.

Maybe food is your weakness, so you might want to include a meal plan as well. Or maybe you have low self-esteem, and you want that to change. Working out can be a great confidence-booster, and can help you realize your full potential as a person, in and out of the gym.

Recognize the parts of you that need work and build on them by factoring them in when planning things out.

3. Figure out time

Most of us have super hectic lives, and if fitness isn’t your job, it can seem near impossible to try and fit in a workout. But it’s possible! Figure out what time of day is best for you.

Some people find it easiest to work out first thing in the morning to get it over and done with before their day has begun. It may be a great start to the day that keeps you going for the next 12 hours.

You might find that the evenings work better for you, when you can focus with a clear head, and put what’s left of the day’s energy into your workout. Or you might be someone who finds they need a midday pick-me-up, and hops off to a workout class during your lunch break.

Despite what others might say, there is no “best time to work out”. There’s only a best time for you.

4. Find a workout you love

If you find yourself dreading each workout you’ve planned to do, then something needs to change. If you hate what you’re doing, you’re not going to keep it up and you won’t reach your goals.

Find exercise that you really love to do. You might love running, yoga, or maybe a good workout class with friends. You might find that a workout app is what keeps you moving. Some people love to work out alone, while others need to have people around them to keep going.

It doesn’t matter how or what you do, as long as you do it and love it!

5. Know when to crank it up

It might seem far off right now, but if you keep going there will come a time when your workouts just aren’t doing it for you anymore. That’s when it’s time to change things up.

You could try something new, or you just might need to turn things up a notch and give yourself more of a challenge – maybe you add another mile to your run or another 10 seconds to each round. Maybe you move up from beginner to intermediate classes. When it comes to fitness, everybody will plateau at some point, and if it happens before you reach your goals, it’s time to push a little harder.


Even after you’ve reached your goal, don’t give up. Set some new goals or find new weaknesses to turn into strengths. Learn what keeps you motivated, whether it’s setting and reaching goals or listening to your favorite songs pumping in your ears while you work up a sweat. Whatever it is, keep moving!
